80% men not biological fathers to their ‘children’
In a staggering revelation of widespread paternity fraud, testing facilities in Malawi report that roughly 80 percent of DNA paternity tests conducted on men who suspect infidelity reveal they are not the biological fathers of the children they have been raising.
The explosive trend is exposing deep-seated marital deceit, leaving families in emotional turmoil and triggering complex legal battles over child custody, maintenance, inheritance and parental responsibility.

Both biotechnology scientist Kingdom Kwapata and Attestation Background Checks and DNA Limited Malawi, which operates clinics in Blantyre and Lilongwe, confirm identical, startling patterns in the test results they process.
Ibrahim Swed, a Lilongwe-based businessperson, is among the growing number of men who sought testing to settle long-standing doubts. He underwent DNA tests in 2022, and the negative results confirmed his worst suspicions.
“I have very little trust in women now,” Swed said. “For all the children I was told were mine, I had to undergo DNA testing to confirm. Some turned out negative, and eventually, I moved on. I strongly encourage fellow men to do the same.”
Another Blantyre resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, sought testing after his girlfriend’s pregnancy timeline failed to match the period they were together.
He said he was prepared to take responsibility and support the child if the test confirmed that he was the biological father.
“I believe it was a good decision to make that choice at an early stage. The cost of knowing the truth is far better than spending millions raising a child who may not be mine. I would rather have the truth from the beginning and make the right decision based on it.
“I lived with doubts for years. After our divorce, I decided to undergo DNA testing to have certainty about my biological children and ensure that my legacy, assets and properties are passed on to them. I contacted Attestation for DNA testing, and now, with the results, I can finally move forward with confidence and peace of mind,” he said.
However, DNA results do not always confirm a man’s suspicions. Mary, a mother from Zomba, recalled how her boyfriend denied fathering their child until a DNA test proved his paternity.
“He denied the child was his, so I chose proof over argument,” Mary said. “Sometimes, DNA speaks louder than words.”
According to Kwapata, a genetics scientist at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar), the surge in testing is largely driven by men investigating suspected unfaithfulness, frequently uncovered through mobile phones and social media.
“Husbands and boyfriends often discover incriminating WhatsApp messages,” Kwapata explained. “They come to me to verify if the child in question is theirs. About 80 percent of paternity cases linked to suspected infidelity are initiated by men, and in roughly 80 percent of those cases, the men are proven right.”
Kwapata handles over 30 paternity cases a month, nearly 400 annually, with negative results consistently hovering around the 80 percent mark. While tests average K400 000 driven up by facility setup costs that can reach K1 billion, some procedures are court-ordered.
“I regularly work with the Child Justice Court on child support disputes where men deny responsibility,” Kwapata added. “In court-referred cases where men are simply trying to evade maintenance, around 90 percent are actually proven to be the biological fathers.”
Attestation Background Checks and DNA Limited Malawi chief executive officer Phillip Mwanza, also reported soaring demand, with his clinics receiving about 20 clients monthly and recording the same 80 percent non-paternity rate.
“Testing is becoming a fixture in divorce proceedings,” Mwanza said.
“Beyond protecting estates and inheritances, men want to avoid the crushing financial cost of spending millions on school fees, healthcare, and living expenses for children who aren’t theirs.”
Mwanza noted that test costs range between K600 000 and K1 million, with results processed within 10 days. He added that his clinic is partnering with the police to offer free DNA testing for rape and sexual assault survivors to assist in criminal prosecutions.
The rising cases of infidelity have also coincided with the increase in the number of divorce cases in the country.
Judiciary spokesperson Ruth Mputeni confirmed a parallel rise in divorce cases, though official figures are still being manually compiled from registries nationwide.
Historical court data shows that 90 percent of divorces involve couples aged between 20 and 35, with total filings jumping from 1 170 in 2020 to 2 504 in 2022.
Public Affairs Committee (PAC) spokesperson Bishop Gilford Matonga described the statistics as a worrying symptom of moral decay and marital infidelity.
“People are becoming unfaithful to their partners. It’s not only women because they are tested but if you go deeper, you see that men as well are unfaithful. Unmarried men are engaging in sexual activities with married women. This shows moral degradation. It is unfortunate that we are in this situation,” said Matonga.
“Economic pressures are also straining marriages. This degradation shows an urgent need for religious institutions to step up and reinforce family values.”
Matonga said some marital problems stem from relationships and behaviours that existed before marriage and continue after couples wed.
